How it works

Rank tracking

How keyword positions are tracked, where the data comes from, and how it merges with Search Console.

Updated 2026-09-13

Rank tracking watches a list of keywords for a website and records their position, clicks and impressions over time.

How many keywords you can track

Up to 500 tracked keywords at once on Starter, 100 during the trial. It is a standing cap, not a monthly allowance: nothing resets it, and to start tracking a new keyword once you are at the cap you stop tracking another one.

Adding keywords

You add keywords to track from your keyword research or clusters; each one is stored against the website as a tracked keyword. Your plan caps how many you can track at once: 500 on the current plan, 100 during the trial.

Where positions come from

Positions aren't crawled independently — they come from Google Search Console. A website needs an active GSC connection (with a valid refresh token and a verified property) for its keywords to update at all; without one, that website is skipped on the daily run.

Update schedule

A daily job runs at 01:00 UTC, finds every website with at least one tracked keyword, and queues an update for each. For every keyword, it pulls that day's position, clicks and impressions from GSC in one batch call and appends it to the keyword's history — so you get a genuine day-by-day trend line, not a single current snapshot.

Merging with Search Console

Because the ranking data is read directly from GSC's own reporting, position sits alongside the clicks and impressions GSC recorded for that same keyword on that same day — there's no separate "GSC data" to reconcile against; it's the same source feeding both.

If GSC returns nothing for a website on a given run, that update is treated as failed and retried rather than being recorded as "no rankings" — a real outage on Google's side delays that day's numbers rather than showing them as zero.
No GSC connection yet? See Google Search Console for how to connect one — rank tracking, and the audit's page-level click and impression data, both depend on it.
