How a citation scan works, which AI engines it checks, how often it runs, and what counts as a citation versus a mention.
A citation scan asks six AI engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and Grok — a set of questions about your brand and website, then checks each answer for whether your brand or domain gets mentioned.
What a scan does
Each engine is asked three questions per scan: what your brand/website is and offers, what the best tools are in your category, and how you compare against competitors. If a response mentions your brand or domain, the scan records it as a citation when the response includes a link back to your site, or a mention when it names you without one. Each recorded item also gets a sentiment tag (Positive, Neutral, Negative) based on the language around it, and the exact prompt that surfaced you is kept so you can see why.
How often it runs
Scans are on demand, with a 24-hour cooldown per website after a scan completes — most customers run one roughly weekly. There's no scheduled daily scan on the current plan, so results come from the scans you trigger yourself.
Results
Once a scan finishes, results are grouped by citations vs. mentions, broken down per engine, and you're notified when the total picture changes meaningfully from your last scan (an increase reads as good news, a drop flags for attention) — a scan that finds nothing new doesn't need a separate notification.
